Fire Escape Gate

Fire escape gates made of extruded slats tend to be a lot stronger than the type made out of roll formed sheet metal.  Wrought iron can be very strong, but it's also very heavy and, perhaps, more than what you need.

Also, regardless of the fire escape gate type, look for a fairly tight grid (with smaller holes between the crossing members).  If buying a wrought iron fire escape gate, make sure there are enough welded crossing members so that its bars can't be pried apart with a car jack (so as to admit a pint-sized juvenile burglar who would unlock the apartment door to admit his older accomplice).

If the fire escape gate is the accordion type (rather than the rigid door type), make sure it has channels that attach to both the top and bottom of the window frame to keep burglars from pushing the fire escape gate inward.

If there is another window near the fire escape, consider putting a gate on it also.  Many burglaries have occurred when the perps climbed from fire escapes over to adjoining windows that lacked gates.

Even though you will have a gate on the fire escape window, make sure that you close and lock the window itself whenever you leave the apartment.  The double barrier is a further deterrent, whereas the open window -- even with the window gate locked -- can be an irresistible temptation.
