Move-In Security Checklist

Change the Locks
To ensure that your new apartment or home will prove to be a safe haven for you, have the locks on every entry door changed by a professional locksmith when you move in. You never know who may have a key to the old locks and you do not want unwanted guests in your home.
New Keys
Though you may have been told that your apartment has a new lock, that may simply mean that the lock came from another apartment in the complex. This presents the risk that someone is still carrying the key to your new place. For your safety, make sure that the lock and keys are both brand new.
Use a Deadbolt
All exterior doors provide far greater security than a simple doorknob lock when they have both a deadbolt and a keyed entry. Deadbolts add a heavier line of defense against break-ins.
